Herbs in Hayaokidori << a small accommodation in Hakuba Nagano Japan
Herbs in Hayaokidori.
We have some herbs and have grown them up. We started growning some new ones this year hoping they could provide special meals and perfume for our guests. Just check what we have.
Oregano. Used for italian stuff like pasta, pizza. A little bit strong smell if it's fresh. Usually used as dried ones. Oregano grows fast, so sometimes we cut some to avoid too much humidity. If there are too many stems, sometimes they don't pass windblow.
Thyme. Works to get rid of smell of meat. This one looked a bit bad in condition in summer, so we put it in a shade, then it got well.
Sparemint flowers are in bloom - white ones. We use sparemint for icecream, cakes etc. This one is 3-4 years old. We devided this one into 7 or more pots because full of roots in the pot !
Peppermint we got this year. Mints survive in winter even where people have snow. No problem for us. But what we have to be careful is that we have to put each and every kind of mint far apart because mints easily get mixed.
Chives. We can pick up some from spring to autumn.
Stevia. Really sweet and few calories. We are sure it works for diet.
Basil. We've already harvested a lot because we have grown them since we seeded. Basil can not survive winter, so have to seed every year.
Charbill. Selfille in French. Sensitive smell as well as its looking. We often use this for fish.
Rosemary. Kinda strong smell. They say that it stimulates our brains, so works to avoid getting old.... Rosemaries originally live in cliffs beside the Meditarranian sea, so they usually get a lot of sunshine and a few rain. So we need to put them in sunshine and do them below roofs when it rains because they strongly dislike getting humid. When i forgot to take some in the house for some days when it rained, they all got died.
Herbs are easy to increase. Cut some stem just below a joint then put it into a small pot of water and see, some roots will appear 1-2 week/s later. Then you put it in a pot.
Oregano (left), Rosemary (right)
Lavender. They get bloom in early summer. They are originally from along the Meditteranian sea, so they like dry weather in summer and moist weather in winter. But we have rainy season here in Japan. So we have to grow them being well drained. Have to cut stems before snow falls to survive winter.
