Here we put some Japanese letters for reference. We hope this helps you a bit to get to our place.

Basic knowledge We Japanese people use 3 kinds of letters.
1. Hirakana (Hiragana) Our original letters. Children learn Hirakana first when they get in an Elementary school. Hirakana described in orange in this page.
2. Katakana Our original letters. Katakana is used for words from abroad. Katakana described in sky blue in this page.
3. Kanji Originally from China. Too many to remember all. A kanji dictionary has at least 7,000 kanji letters. Kanji described in black in this page.
The hard stuff for you is we use these 3 kinds letters mixing in a line. Perhaps this sounds just like you use alphabet, Greek letters and Crylic letters mixing in a line.
